Tchaikovsky & The Mermaid - Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans - March 20, 2022 2:30pm
The concert started out with a piece not in the program, a performance of Melody by Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk. This piece is being performed by orchestras around the world this weekend in solidarity with Ukraine. A beautiful piece with a powerful message.
Next up was the world premiere of Point of Tranquility; I was very impressed with the percussion during this number in particular. Following that was an outstanding performance Augustin Handelich (including a short encore!) with some of the most incredible violin playing I have ever witnessed! My favorite part was his use of dynamics, especially when played against the rest of the orchestra. And rounding out the program was a performance of The Mermaid, inspired by the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. I haven’t heard many pieces with two harps before and I thought this piece especially used them to great advantage.
Overall, another beautiful Sunday afternoon with the BPO! Can’t wait for the next M&T Classics Series event, Schumann’s Cello coming up April 1-2. Tickets are available at BPO.org!
