So, I have issues with this show. I honestly didn’t want to see it, but since it got so many nominations, figured I should form my own opinion of this production. And I was extremely impressed with certain aspects of it.
The lighting and sound design were both incredible and unique; fitting the show but also modernizing it. The choreographed opening of Bud Light cans as part of a song was probably my favorite part!
Having the entire audience lit for most of the show (in the round) made the small cast feel appropriate, because everyone else was part of the show. I thought the direction was well done as well; with all the actors on stage until it was Judd’s scene, where he realized he was all alone. And both Curly and Ado Annie were standout performers who I hope are featured in their Tony preview.
But I still don’t like parts of the show. I was so happy at the intermission when I thought they had cut the dream ballet sequence, only to be disappointed when that’s how they started act 2. Only instead of a dream ballet, it was a solo interpretive dance that dragged on for far too long, was not explained in the slightest and felt out of place, was hyper-sexualized, and consisted of uncomfortable staring at audience members. That piece alone ruined the show for me unfortunately.
Also, the plot is just not something that should be celebrated. And I appreciated this production trying to show how dark the ending truly is. However, the effect was ruined by audience members who began clapping along because all they hear is a pretty song.
I am glad I saw this production and was truly impressed with some of the performances and scenic elements. But I would also be ok if we stopped reviving this show. 🤷♀ #EilishsTheaterExperiences #Broadway #Theater #Playbill #MusicalTheater
