Disney brings the Magic of Broadway to Shea's Performing Arts Center

After 514 days, I was overjoyed to be back in the Wonder Theater of Shea's Performing Arts Center for The Music of Disney on Broadway concert! While I have seen numerous versions of this concert, from the streaming version put on to support The Actor's Fund in April 2020 and multiple years going to the Epcot Festival of the Arts for the Disney on Broadway series, it was so incredible to hear these songs again performed LIVE by incredible artists for a packed house. I think the entire audience was just happy to be back in a theater, but to see a fantastic performance on top of it made the night that much more enjoyable. (And of course, I'll take any excuse to dress up for a night out; my Disney apparel has been dormant for too long!)

I've had the pleasure of seeing all 4 performers previously; Kissy Simmons at the Epcot Festival of the Arts Disney on Broadway concert, Ashley Brown in Mary Poppins on Broadway, Michael James Scott as the Genie in Aladdin and as the Minstrel in Something Rotten, and Josh Strickland in Peepshow in Vegas. I've also had the privilege of seeing music director Jim Abbot at Epcot numerous times and always love his enthusiasm for the show! Each performer was fantastic, and especially shined when singing the songs from their Disney show on Broadway. I particularly enjoyed Josh's take on My Strongest Suit!

While others in the audience may not have recognized the lesser-known songs from Aida and Newsies, I have to say those are some of my favorite shows to see. And I never got a chance to see Freaky Friday when it was playing at the Signature Theatre so I was very excited to hear those songs performed live (and I'll need to watch the movie again on Disney+)! The transitions between songs and shows was seamless, and I think adding an intermission was helpful as we reemerge from quarantine, especially for kids who haven't had to sit still for that long the last year and a half.

I believe this specific concert will continue touring, so I'd highly recommend buying a ticket if it is coming to a theater near you! And make sure to check out the separate Disney Princess Concert series (the new incarnation of the Broadway Princess Party) launching Fall 2021 (show information and tickets available at

And of course, I cannot wait for the Frozen tour to begin again at Shea's this September. I'm so glad live theater is back and we get to experience the magic of Disney on Broadway again!
