There is nothing like a live performance when it's a Liz Callaway concert, it's going to be an incredible one. I am so glad I got to be at Liz Callaway's first performance in almost 2 years at 54 Below for her show Comin' Around Again. Not only do I love the songs she sang, it was so moving to be there for her first show back and be part of the memorable night of coming around once again.
I had the pleasure of seeing her before at 54 Below as part of the Broadway Princess Party and as soon as I found out she would be back, bought a ticket to see her again. I didn't realize how much of my childhood was spent listening to her sing!
While I always love getting to hear her sing from Anastasia and she did a beautiful rendition as part of this concert, the highlight of this show was her fantastic performance of Meadowlark, receiving a standing ovation in the middle of the show! Her rendition was flawless and unfortunately, I couldn't get a video as I was too busy sobbing (whoops!); luckily she has a previous performance on YouTube.
With songs ranging from classic hits to Broadway showstoppers, her concert was a perfect blend of audience favorites that she is known for and numbers that highlight her incredible voice. Another favorite was responding to the prompt; name something that isn't an Olympic sport, but feels like an Olympic sport. Instead of Meadowlark, she responded that it would be singing Sondheim; then proceeded to sing a hilarious number that joked about the how difficult it is to sing some of the Sondheim classics. I would say the only thing harder than singing Sondheim would be playing Sondheim, but her fabulous music director kept up and let her voice shine through!
To finish out the show, she sang the Act 1 finale, The Story Goes On from Baby that earned her a Tony nomination for her performance in 1984. Coming out of the pandemic, this song has even more meaning, and it is a beautiful reminder that our story will go on even after the year and a half we've gone through. Check out the full video on my Instagram reels to see the powerful ending of the show.
I'm so glad theater is back and 54 Below is once again open for performers to share their incredible talents with audiences. It is also wonderful that they are adding the option to livestream performances for audiences who cannot be in NYC. Be sure to check the 54 Below website to see what is coming next and get an intimate concert experience with some of your favorite Broadway performers! I can't wait to see what's coming around next.
